The shower is the wettest spot in your home. It is constantly wet, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The average amount of moisture that a shower is exposed to in a year equates to 2,500 inches of rainfall. To keep all of that moisture from causing damage to your shower, you must waterproof it. And to appropriately waterproof it, you must use the highest quality products in waterproofing shower tile floors. Here, we’ll show you the steps and products you’ll need to get better shower floor tiles.
How to Waterproof a Bathroom Floor
- Clean the floor.
It is essential to clean the floor before beginning the waterproofing process. Using a dustpan and broom, remove any dust and dirt.
- Apply the Tradies Choice Master Primer.
Tradies Choice Master Primer, the best tiling primer, is required for this step. This is a water-based acrylic primer that dries quickly and can be used on porous and non-porous substrates like existing tiles, vinyl, carpet, and vinyl adhesive residue. Pouring your Tradies Choice Master Primer into a bucket or roller tray first is the simplest way to implement it. Then, using a paint roller, find your way around the walls to a height of about 20 cm, beginning in the back corner. Then, use the Tradies Choice Master Primer to cover the entire bathroom floor.
- Fill the gaps with Parfix All Purpose Silicone
After the primer has dried, silicone seals all of the gaps between the floor and the wall using Parfix All Purpose Silicone. This is a clear, neutral cure silicone designed for use in a variety of household applications. Parfix All Purpose Silicone is highly flexible, mould and UV resistant, and can be used on shower screens, metal roofing, concrete, and gutters. Remove any excess Parfix All Purpose Silicone with a paint scraper. Allow the silicone to dry for 24 hours before beginning the waterproofing process.
- Tape the wall with masking tape.
Wrap masking tape around the wall at the level you want to waterproof. In our case, we’re masking to the height of the primer application. If you want to waterproof the shower recess, place the masking tape at a height of 1.8m.
- Make use of a waterproofing agent
Begin in the far back corner of the bathroom. Using a roller, apply the waterproofing agent. Use the waterproofing agent up to the length of the masking tape on the wall. Then, from around the width of the paint roller, apply waterproofing agent where the wall reaches the floor.
- The waterproof membrane should be applied to the joints.
Cut the waterproof membrane to the length of the bathroom walls. Place the membrane so that half of it is against the wall and the other half is against the bathroom floor, covering the crack. To adhere the membrane, paint it with the waterproofing agent with a paint roller or brush. Continue until all of the gaps in the floor have been covered with membrane and painted over.
- The entire floor should be watertight.
Paint the rest of the floor after you’ve covered all of the membranes on the walls and bathroom floor. After that, let it dry for 24 hours.
- The final coat of waterproofing agent should be applied.
After the waterproofing agent has dried, use a brush or roller to apply a final coat of waterproofing to the walls and bathroom floor. This second coat will need to dry for another 24 hours before it is ready.
Why Should I Waterproof My Shower Floor?
Waterproofing tile shower floors is a must if the structural integrity of your home is a priority. Excessive water exposure can cause water to pool inside the cavities of the walls. Moulds grow as a result, making the indoor environment unhealthy and unsafe to occupy. Furthermore, such structural damage can be extremely costly to repair.
All of this work appears to be simple. But it requires professional workers to be completed properly. Waterproofing shower floor tiles is a difficult task, so you should hire a professional to make your shower floor tile perfectly.
